| DIAPHRAGM PACING INITIATED ON A CCHS PATIENT IN JAPAN VIA VPICU TELEMEDICINE - September 26, 2005 |
On Monday afternoon, September 26, 2005, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) helped to initiate diaphragm pacing in a Japanese patient by instructing our Japanese physician colleagues via VPICU TELEMEDICINE.
In July, 2005, the patient had diaphragm pacers surgically implanted here at CHLA, by Doctors Don Shaul and Gordon McComb, using the innovative thoracoscopic technique originally described by us. However, pacing is not actually started until 2-months after surgery.
Doctors Keens, Perez, and Yuan, from CHLA's Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, instructed our Japanese colleagues how to initiate pacing via VPICU TELEMEDICINE. The system worked well, and we were treated to applause from the many physicians in attendance in Tokyo after diaphragm pacing was successfully started. |
